Scripture: Mark 12:28-34

In the passage from Mark 12:28-34, a scribe asks Jesus which is the most important commandment. Jesus replies that the greatest commandment is to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. This quote comes from the Shema, a central prayer in Judaism (Deuteronomy 6:4). The second greatest commandment, according to Jesus, is to love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus emphasizes that there is no commandment greater than these two. The scribe agrees with Jesus, stating that loving God and loving one’s neighbor is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices. Recognizing the scribe’s understanding, Jesus tells him that he is not far from the kingdom of God. After this exchange, no one dares to ask Jesus any more questions.
