I’ve been thinking and praying over a mini teaching series that I’m going to be doing as part of our “Deeper Church” studies through Ephesians on the topic of Prayer. As I was thinking about I went back to a verse I’d already taught on from Ephesians 1:4 which says “even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.”. Paul says – our destiny is chosen by God even before the foundations of the world were put into place. So then, what need of prayer? Why pray if God’s choosing is already sealed?
I think that this is the most retro thing ever. The whole world seems to be going crazy for retro things at the moment doesn’t it? What is retro? Well, the word “retro” comes from the Latin word meaning “backwards” or “in past times”. Wikipedia says that to be retro the object has to be 15-20 years old. This means all of my toys that I had as a child are now considered retro. Scalextric, Action Man and Subbuteo would all be considered retro today! Jump onto Pinterest and you’ll find lots of retro things.
However, if you’re into your retro, think about this: prayer is truly retro. If what Paul says is right (and I believe it to be to so), what you pray for today effected yesterday! If you pray for someones salvation today, you’re praying for something to take place before the foundation of the world took place. That’s retro!
